About the LNC

The Latino Nutrition Coalition (LNC) is an Oldways’ educational program inspiring Latinos to improve and maintain their health through traditional foods and active lifestyles. The LNC creates practical, culturally-aware materials in English and Spanish that help Latinos combine the best of their healthy food traditions with the realities of modern American life.

Founded in 2005 by Oldways, the Latino Nutrition Coalition (LNC) is a multi-faceted alliance of industry, scientists, chefs, policy makers, and other leaders who are united in their goal to address and transform the current dietary trends in Latinos living in the United States, thereby reducing the correlating deleterious health effects among this population. The LNC utilizes the support, expertise, and passion of its members to develop education and community outreach programs, to heighten public awareness of the need for Latino-focused public health, and establish culturally relevant nutrition tools such as the Latin American Diet Pyramid and the Camino Mágico Supermarket Guide.

Our Mission

The Latino Nutrition Coalition is dedicated to inspiring Latinos to improve and maintain their health through traditional foods and active lifestyles.

We are devoted to addressing and transforming the current dietary trends in Latinos in the United States, thereby reducing the negative health effects among this population. Our mission is to provide the Latino community, and those that serve them, with easy-to-understand nutrition, cooking, shopping, and health information.

History

The LNC was originated in 2005 by Oldways, the non-profit food issues think tank that creates and organizes a wide variety of programs and materials about healthy eating, drinking, lifestyle and the traditional pleasures of the table. Its educational programs are for consumers, scientists, the food industry, health professionals, chefs, journalists and policy makers.

In 2005, Oldways organized the Latin American Diet Summit in Mexico City.

The three-day summit explored the health problems – especially obesity and diabetes – that disproportionately affect the Latino community. Doctors and international nutrition experts speaking at the conference presented compelling evidence that the health problems increasingly faced by Latinos can be tied to the population’s move away from the varied traditional diet of their ancestors to one that includes a limited range of nutrients in super size portions. The main focus of the conference, however, was on solutions.

All attendees agreed that although compelling information on the benefits of good nutrition is out there, consumers have a hard time changing their behaviors. Before the Summit ended, Mission Foods stunned conference attendees and organizers with a pledge to provide a generous grant for the founding of the Latino Nutrition Coalition. This would enable Oldways and the LNC to carry out the goals of the Consensus Statement and to provide the Latino community with easy-to-understand nutrition information that can be easily applied to modern life.
